Bawtry Retail Association Meeting – New GDPR Law

At last night’s Bawtry Retail Association members meeting Andrew Bevan, Partner at Jones & Co Solicitors presented highlights from the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gave members an action plan and  ‘12 steps to take now’ checklist to help them prepare and ensure compliancy. GDPR is a new EU law that will come into effect on 25 May 2018 to replace the current Data Protection Act. At last night’s Bawtry Retail Association members meeting Andrew Bevan, Partner at Jones & Co Solicitors presented highlights from the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gave members an action plan and  ‘12 steps to take now’ checklist to help them prepare and ensure compliancy.

GDPR is a new EU law that will come into effect on 25 May 2018 to replace the current Data Protection Act. It’s the biggest overhaul of data protection legislation for over 25 years, and will introduce new requirements for how organisations process personal data.

 

For those who don’t know too much about the laws surrounding data protection our current, soon to be old, Data Protection Act is an act that controls how our personal data is stored and used by companies/ businesses. The new data protection act, the GDPR looks to improve upon the previous act by improving some of the rules and also implement new ones. An example of this is the consent rule. Businesses and Companies need to make giving consent explicitly clear now instead of being lost in illegible terms and conditions.
